WBS and QuickPlan

These two apps (QuickPlan and WBS) are both used for project management:

  • WBS is used to break a project into work elements in a tree structure, helping organize to-do work and prepare estimates (mainly used as input for project contracts).
  • QuickPlan helps create project schedules to guide execution and track progress after project kickoff.

The major differences:

  • From a typical process perspective, WBS is used as an input to project scheduling.
  • A work element in WBS is not the same as a task in a project schedule.
  • When project work is divided by deliverables, those deliverables do not map one-to-one to tasks in the project plan; in this case, WBS serves only as schedule input.
  • Project work can also be divided by high-level tasks; in this case, the relationship between WBS work elements and project tasks is closer.

QuickPlan supports importing a WBS file (.wbs) as a new project, and can also export a project as a WBS file.

How do I import from an MS Excel file?

How to create a new work element?

You can create a new work element in the chart view.

  • Tap to select an existing work element.
  • Tap the “Add sub” menu to add a sub-work package.
  • Double-tap the new work element to edit work package properties.
  • Long press on the work package to display other context menus.

WBS also supports input in the outline view.

  • Tap the “+” button to add a new work element. If an existing work element is selected, the new work element will be a child of the selected work element.
  • Tap the “New first-level work element” button at the bottom of the work list to create a new work element at the first outline level.
  • Swipe left/right on a work element to change its outline level.

Gestures

  • Modify the work tree structure in the outline view.
    • Change work element outline level – swipe left / right
    • Change work element sequence – hold and move up or down
    • Move a work element to another group – hold and move up or down
  • Maintain work elements in the chart view.
    • Change work properties – double tap
    • Change work display properties – long press
    • Collapse/Expand group – tap on group icon
    • Collapse/Expand ALL groups – tap with two fingers together
    • Zoom – pinch
    • Other operations such as selecting/unselecting work items and opening menus

How to create the demo chart in minutes?

Follow the steps we used to create the demo WBS in the user guide video.

  • Prepare the WBS outline data in a text file on a Mac (the space before the work name is used to adjust work element outline level).

  • Transfer the text file to the iPad (via AirDrop, email, third-party cloud apps, etc.).
  • Open the WBS app, create a new WBS document, and paste the text into the batch input view.

Where are my documents stored?

We (the WBS app developer) do not run any servers that store user-generated WBS documents. Users own the WBS documents they create - each WBS document is stored on the user’s device.
